The choice

The three washes

High-pressure car wash

High pressure wash

What it is Cold water at high pressure. It shifts mud, sand and built-up road grime.

Best for Bakkies, 4x4s, and anything with too much on it for steam.

Waterless car wash

Waterless wash

What it is A spray-on product and a cloth, lifting light surface dirt without a hose at all.

Best for A tidy-up between washes.

Which one does your car need

Look at the car rather than at the calendar. What is on the paint decides which of the three it needs.

If it just needs freshening up, the waterless wash is the quickest of the three.

Still not sure? Ask us at the gate, or send a photograph first.

Asked at the gate

Will steam damage my paint?

The gun stays off the panel and uses very little water. If your car has a wrap, a respray under three months old or damaged clear coat, tell us first and we'll check steam suits it.

Do you use chemicals?

Not in the steam wash: it works with heat, so there's nothing left on the paint to rinse off. The waterless wash uses a spray-on product.

Can you wash a bakkie or a 4x4?

Yes. If it's been off a tar road, it usually wants the pressure wash first. See one we did.

Water

Three to four litres a car.

A steam wash

3 to 4 litres

Little enough that the bay doesn't need draining and nothing runs into the road.

A pressure washer, the same car

150 to 300 litres

Both figures: Optima's steamer brochure.

That is the whole argument for a steam wash in a coastal town.

What it costs

Priced per wash, and what a valet is

Each wash has its own price. Ask at the gate or on WhatsApp.

A valet goes further than a wash: the seats, carpets, glass, vents and boot, mostly by hand, so it takes longer.

Prams and car seats are part of the valet too. For sofas, carpets and mattresses, see Carpets and upholstery
